What is the difference between Birding, Birding with a Camera, and Photography Tours?

This is our most common question! We categorize our tours into three distinct styles to ensure you are with like-minded travelers who share your pace and priorities:

Birding Tours

Focus: Species count and rare target birds.

The pace is brisk. We move quickly between locations to maximize the number of species seen. While we enjoy the views, we don't linger once a bird is identified unless it's a rare specialty. Perfect for the serious "lister."

Birding with a Camera

Focus: High-quality sightings and record shots.

A middle ground. We take the time to enjoy a bird and allow for casual photography, but we won't wait hours for the "perfect" light. It's about a relaxed pace, wonderful views, and documenting the journey without the pressure of technical perfection.

Photography Tours

Focus: The "Perfect Shot."

The pace is very slow. We might spend an entire morning at a single perch waiting for the right light or a specific action. We prioritize technical perfection, background, and lighting over moving on to the next species.

Do I need to be a professional photographer to join a Photography Tour?

Absolutely not! Our Photography Tours are designed for all skill levels. The primary requirement is patience. We provide technical guidance on-site to help you get the most out of your gear, whether you're using a top-tier mirrorless setup or a high-end bridge camera.

What group sizes can I expect?

To ensure an intimate experience and better sightings, we keep our groups small. Most tours are limited to 6-8 participants. Our Photography specific tours often have even smaller groups (4-6) to ensure everyone has a clear line of sight at optimal locations.

What gear do you recommend bringing?

This varies by tour, but generally: for Birding, bring high-quality binoculars (8x42 is standard). For Photography, we recommend a lens with at least 400mm reach. A detailed gear list tailored to your specific destination and tour type will be provided upon booking.

Are your tours physically demanding?

Each tour has an 'Activity Level' rating (Easy, Medium, Difficult). 'Easy' involves short walks on flat ground, while 'Difficult' might involve steep mountain trails or long days in the field. Check the specific tour page for details.

What is included in the tour price?

Most of our expeditions are 'all-inclusive' from the start point to the end point. This typically includes all lodging, meals, ground transportation, local guide fees, and park entrance fees. International airfare and tips are generally excluded.
